The church of Santa Maria de Castell - Lllebre is documented in the year 995 in a donation. The name derives from the Latin Kastro vetere, which means old castle.
It is located on a rocky ridge, surrounded by other outbuildings of the old castle that dominated the plain of Oliana. The church has a single nave, topped to the east by an ultra-semicircular apse that is narrower than the nave.
The nave is covered with a pointed barrel vault reinforced by two toral arches.
The main door opens on the south façade on two brackets that suggest the existence of a portico. Two other doors open on the western façade.
The bell tower is off-centre on the west façade. It is square in plan and has a high plinth and two storeys topped by a pyramidal roof. The twin windows are separated by a column with a corbelled capital.
The church of Santa Maria has two periods of construction: one from the 11th century, concentrated in the western wall, part of the southern wall and the bell tower, and the rest from the 12th century.
