The Espiadet marble quarry was discovered in Roman times. At the time, marble was used for paving and creating baths in thermal baths and for decorating rich homes. It was also used to make medieval sarcophagi and ex-voto altars.
In 1684, the Espiadet site was declared a Royal Quarry by Louis XIV, enabling Campan marbles to be used to decorate the most prestigious buildings in France and around the world.
Since 2004, the Marbrés de l'Espiadet association has been working to preserve and recognise this exceptional heritage.
